What is usually included and not included?

- Usually included: yacht and crew, standard equipment, basic insurance, bed linen and towels.
- Not included and often through APA: fuel, food and beverages, harbour fees and anchor buoys, local taxes and park fees, delivery-return fees, communications and internet outside bundles, laundry and dry cleaning fees, water sports rentals or licences, crew gratuity.
What hidden costs do you encounter in practice?
The items below cause the biggest discrepancies between quotation and final bill. None of them are meant to surprise, but they do depend on your itinerary, cruising behaviour and preferences.
- Fuel consumption: not only sailing the yacht, but also tenders and generators for air conditioning and kitchen count. Many anchor hours and short trips save considerably. Read: Is fuel included in a superyacht charter?
- Port fees and anchor buoys: Rates vary by hotspot and season. In July-August in popular Mediterranean ports, prices are higher than in early or late season.
- VAT and local taxes: The VAT rate depends on the country of embarkation and the route sailed. In Europe, rates vary by destination. In addition, tourist taxes or national park fees may apply. See also: VAT rate for yacht charter with crew.
- Delivery costs: If you start outside the yacht's home port, delivery and redelivery kilometres may be charged, including extra fuel and possible harbour fees en route.
- Provisions and drinks: the chef buys everything to order. Special diets, premium wines or champagne increase the average daily cost.
- Water sports and toys: use of available toys is usually included, but rental of extras such as seabobs, e-foils or an extra jet ski goes through the APA. Jet skis often require a recognised boating licence.
- Communication and internet: Fast satellite or extra data bundles are not unlimited as standard. Intensive work on board or streaming can incur additional data costs.
- Laundry, dry cleaning and personal expenses: extra or delicate clothing, spa and wellness treatments ashore and private transfers are not included in the charter price.
- Tipping the crew: Not compulsory, but customary for excellent service. In many cruising areas, 10-15 per cent of the charter price is a common guideline.
APA explained: how much and what happens to residual balance?
Advance Provisioning Allowance is an advance on variable expenses, typically 30-35 per cent of the charter price in the Mediterranean. You deposit this in advance. The captain manages the expenses and keeps receipts for fuel, provisions, port charges and other variables. In case of higher consumption, additional deposits are made in the interim; what you don't spend, you will receive back in full with a cost statement afterwards.
