Itinerary | 7 days in the Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast is a stretch of coastline along the southern edge of Italy’s Sorrentine Peninsula, in the Campania region. This magnificent World Heritage Site covers 34 miles of majestic terrain; sky-high costal cliffs display vibrant vegetation and colourful villages nestling the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean, creating a scene that has the power to stop even the most seasoned of travellers dead in their tracks.
Day 1 - Naples
As one of the oldest continually inhabited urban areas in the world, this Italian destination is brimming with culture, opulence and understated architectural beauty. After making your way to shore, we suggest starting your day with a visit to Via Tribunali – known affectionately by travellers as “Pizza Alley”. Given Naples invented pizza, you can expect a lust-worthy meal that you’ll still be dreaming about hours later. After an indulgent lunch at one of the many restaurants, you can then explore the region’s rich history on a self-guided walking tour of the cobbled stone lanes and vibrant streets. For those seeking the best view of the city, make your way to the top of Castel Sant’Elmo (via foot or the aerial tram) for a panoramic outlook across the coastline.
Day 2 - Ischia
As you sail into Ischia, it’s impossible not to be completely awe-inspired by the beauty of this volcanic island. After first settling in the 8th century, Ischia is today celebrated for its thermal spas, manicured gardens, striking Aragonese castle and modest Italian airs. Start your day by anchoring at Cartaromana Beach, where the calmer south coast waters offer the perfect conditions to explore the underwater Roman remains. After a morning spent lazing in the sun and diving through the glistening waters, you can head to Ristorante Alberto to toast to your island adventures over a spread of simple yet utterly divine Italian fare. From here, you can continue the festivities by visiting Gardenia Mare for an afternoon of bubbles, live jazz music and the finest views of the island.
Day 3 - Capri
From the minute you arrive in Capri, you’ll feel right at home. Here, steep cliffs rise majestically from an impossibly blue sea, and elegant villas drip with wisteria and bougainvillaea. The rugged mountains provide the perfect backdrop for a morning cappuccino after docking your yacht and making your way to the land, before a day spent perusing luxury boutiques, handmade leather makers and bespoke jewellery stores. While visiting the island, a visit to the striking Blue Grotto is another must. Charter your yacht along the villa-dotted coastline and indulge in the views of sunshine reflecting off the sapphire waters. It’s the type of place to sit back and enjoy the sublime moments of simply being in good company.
Day 4 - Amalfi
With its sun-filled piazzas and small beach, Amalfi is the ideal place to explore by foot. You can easily walk from one end to the other in about 20 minutes and you’ll be awe-inspired for the entire journey. Beyond the decadent restaurants and buzzing bars that spill out onto the brick streets, you’ll also find this destination is full of architectural beauty. A crowd-favourite is the Cattedrale di Sant’Andrea, which is a bricks-and-mortar reflection of the town’s former maritime superpower. It makes a striking impression at the top of a sweeping 62-step staircase and offers incredible views of the town, ocean and beyond. While on land, you can also stretch out with a stroll through the town centre’s lanes or stop by the lively Piazza del Duomo. Before sailing to your next destination, be sure to explore Grotta dello Smeraldo and the incredible waters that surround it.
Day 5 - Ravello
The hilltop village of Ravello is just a 20-minute drive from Amalfi. Here, you’ll discover trendsetting 30-somethings strutting into wine bars and quaint lanes just waiting to be explored. If you’ve been craving a winery visit, drop into Casa Vinicola Ettore Sammarco on the way to the village and savour a drop of a rich rosso or a crisp bianco. Once you’ve reached the village, head to the gardens at Villa Rufolo for some of the coastline’s best views. Babel Wine Bar Deli & Art should be on the list for a tasty snack with another tipple to wash it down.
Day 6 - Positano
Positano is arguably the most famous and iconic village on the Amalfi coast, famed for its steep cobbled streets and intimate pebbled beaches. After arriving on shore, we suggest starting your day with the cliff-hugging Sentiero delgi Dei hiking trail, which will lead you on a pristine pathway through the sun-bleached peach, pink and terracotta streets to neighbouring coastal villages and back again. For the fashion-enthused, it’s only fitting that the birthplace of moda Positano is filled with stylish boutiques and stores of handmade pieces. The final stop of any day visit should always be the Palazzo Murat – a palace-turned luxury hotel where you can toast to the day with the cocktail or vino of your choosing. It’s a setting you’ll simply never forget.
Day 7 - Sorrento
Though famous for lemons and luxury hotels, Sorrento is often overlooked in favour of Amalfi or Naples. However, the understated appeal of this historic coastal town only adds to the magic. Upon arriving in the bay by boat, visitors are always enthralled by the views of the Bay of Naples and incredible ancient architecture. When paired with the 55-metre-high rocky cliffs and azure waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, it’s no wonder so many people can spend all day just watching the world go by. For those looking to experience the view from land, there are plentiful lanes with charming boutiques and the Piazza Tasso waiting to be explored. As well as dining al fresco with locals and sipping aperol spritz at sidewalk ristorantes, you can also bathe in the sunshine at one of the 20-odd beaches dotted around the coastline. But when the sun begins to dip below the horizon, you’ll want to be seated at the Bellevue Sirene for the best view on offer.
