Choosing the right charter yacht for your next trip
Your choice in 3 steps: destination, company and destination
Start by getting your requirements in focus. This helps us to immediately present a shortlist that really fits.
- Travel purpose Determine whether the focus is on relaxed sunbathing and dining, business entertainment, family fun with water sports or a special celebration. This drives the choice of yacht type, toys and service.
- Company Number and type of guests, age and any requirements around privacy or accessibility. Consider layout of suites, child safety, stability and noise level.
- Destination and season Mediterranean in high season or Caribbean in European winter. Weather conditions, distances and port capacity determine sailing pace and route comfort. Charter price is seasonal with fixed price in low season and fixed price in high season.
Which yacht type suits you
Yacht choice influences comfort, stability, range and atmosphere on board. Below are the most frequently chosen types within the luxury segment.
Motor yacht
Ideal if you are looking for speed, quiet and maximum amenities. You benefit from generous outdoor spaces, a beach club, often a Jacuzzi and extensive water toys. Motor yachts range from sporty to full-fledged floating villas with fitness areas and wellness. For groups looking to combine several hotspots in a short time, a motor yacht is often the most efficient choice.
Catamaran
Catamarans offer exceptional stability and plenty of living space on the main deck, which is nice for families with children or guests prone to seasickness. The wide hull makes for generous lounges and often a ground-level experience. Speed is less important, comfort all the more. Light trips between bays and anchoring in shallower waters are where catamarans excel here.
Sailing yacht
For those who wish to experience the charm of sailing, a sailing yacht offers a unique combination of tranquillity, freedom and elegance. You trade a little deck space and speed for the traditional, serene character of sailing. Modern sailing yachts in the luxury segment combine comfort with sportiness, and are perfect for destinations with reliable winds and short distances.
Layout and suites
For every type of yacht, pay attention to the layout: the number and position of the suites, the location of the master suite, and the balance between indoor and outdoor spaces. Consider suites for couples, children or crew. Details such as soundproofing, stabilisers and access to the beach club determine your day-to-day comfort.
Crew and service on board
On our yachts, you’ll always sail with a professional crew. The captain ensures safety and selects the best routes, the chef prepares a personalised menu, whilst the stewards and stewardesses provide discreet, attentive service. The technical team maintains the systems and supervises water sports activities. Look out for experience in the intended cruising area, language skills, child-friendliness and the crew-to-guest ratio. A strong crew elevates every trip to a higher standard of service.
Price structure for luxury yacht charters
A charter consists of the charter price and variable costs. Transparency in advance prevents surprises along the way. Want to know exactly what is included as standard? What is included in a superyacht charter?
| Section | Guideline | What is covered |
|---|---|---|
| Charter price | Fixed seasonal price | Use of yacht, crew, standard equipment. Price is seasonal with fixed price in low season and fixed price in high season. |
| APA | 30-35 per cent | Advance Provisioning Allowance for fuel, port charges, food and drinks, local transport, extras and smaller on-board expenses. |
| Taxes | Depending on jurisdiction | VAT or local charter fees per sailing area. |
| Tipping | Indication 10 to 15 per cent | Usual for service satisfaction, entirely at your own discretion. |
| Possible delivery | Variable | Transfer of the yacht to the start location if required. |
The APA is paid in advance and managed by the crew during the trip. At the end, you will receive an itemised statement; unused balance will be refunded. If you choose special wines, long crossings or moorings in iconic ports, this mainly affects the APA consumption. How does the APA work on a yacht charter?

Frequently asked questions on choosing the right charter yacht
How to choose the right yacht?
Start with travel purpose, company and destination. Establish what you value in atmosphere, speed and comfort. Determine the desired yacht type and layout of suites. Then check crew experience in the intended sailing area and fine-tune service, menu and activities via the preference sheet. With this basis, we can quickly compile an accurate shortlist, including expected APA and availability.
What is the 10% rule for yachts?
That rule deals with ownership costs of a yacht and states that maintenance and operation are roughly 10 per cent of the purchase value per year. For charters, this is irrelevant. For a luxury charter, count on a seasonal charter price plus an APA of typically 30 to 35 per cent for variable costs, supplemented by any taxes and, at your discretion, a tip.
Do I need a boating licence on a luxury charter yacht?
No. Yachts from 24 meters are always chartered with a full, certified crew. The captain is responsible for navigation and safety, while the rest of the crew takes care of service, cuisine and technology. So you do not need to present a licence and can enjoy the experience carefree.
What are the best yacht models?
When it comes to charters, the condition of the yacht, its layout and, above all, the quality of the crew are more important than the model. We look at build quality, recent refits, stabilisers, noise levels and how well the yacht matches your requirements. A proposal always includes details of the facilities, suites and the standard of service provided by the crew.
